A suburb of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Minto is under the jurisdiction of the local government area of Campbelltown and part of the Macarthur region. Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, the Earl of Minto, who served as Viceroy of India from 1807 to 1814, was the origin of the suburb`s name. The indigenous Tharawal people lived in the region that now makes up the suburb of Minto before the First Fleet brought in European settlers. William Redfern, the colony`s first doctor, received 800 acres (3.2 km2) in the region in 1811 from Governor Lachlan Macquarie. In honor of Macquarie`s wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Campbell, he gave it the name Campbellfield. The land was utilized by Redfern as a sheep pasture and vineyard. To build affordable homes, a large portion of land on the east side of Minto was sold to the Housing Commission in 1969. Soon after, large industrial development was developed in the area, and due to this Minto had successfully transformed from a village to a Sydney suburb.
