A suburb of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, St Andrews is in the local government area of the City of Campbelltown. The area that became St Andrews was named after Scotland's patron saint, St Andrew, by Scottish prisoner Andrew Thompson in the early 1800s. For the following 150 years or more, the region was utilized for dairy and cow production. The state administration originally proposed to build a large satellite city in the region in 1957, but the plan was abandoned when the inhabitants objected, emphasizing the excellent farming land nearby. Still, there was no stopping Sydney's spread into Campbelltown. The community was given the authorized name St Andrews in 1976, and Landcom started constructing residences there in 1977. The community was well-established and a primary school opened its doors the next year. The suburb of St Andrews had 5,952 residents in 2006 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census, with a higher than usual percentage of Australian citizens at 90% and foreign-born individuals at 28%.
