A suburb situated in the south-western part of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Holsworthy is under the local government area of the City of Liverpool. The suburb is known for its large Australian Army reserve, Holsworthy Barracks, where military exercises are often carried out. The reserve is just on the opposite side of Heathcote Road, which connects Holsworthy with Liverpool, Bankstown, Engadine, Heathcote, and Lucas Heights. The suburb was named after Holsworthy, Devon, England, where the former Governor Lachlan Macquarie married his wife, Elizabeth Campbell. Before World War II, it was spelled as Holdsworthy until the ‘d’ was dropped. When the First Fleet arrived, the Tharawal people were pushed back from their traditional lands around the area surrounding Sydney. Land grants for farming then began along with the arrival of European settlers; and due to the quality of the land, crops of wheat, vegetables, and corn were soon harvested in Holsworthy.
