About Harris Park

A suburb located in the Greater Western region of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Harris Park is under the local government area of the City of Parramatta. A precinct in the suburb was officially known as ‘Little India’ due to the plurality of Hindu and Indian population, which both make up the largest ethnic and religious group. The first person that has been given a land grant in present-day Harris Park was a convict named James Ruse in 1791. He was the first one to develop a private farm in Australia, which was known as Experiment Farm, it sowed the first wheat in the country. The farm was later bought by John Harris who already received land grants in the surrounding area in 1793 and 1805. Harris built a cottage on this farm and the suburb was later named after him; his cottage was then listed as a heritage and opened to the public.
