About Old Toongabbie

A suburb of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Old Toongabbie is in the City of Parramatta’s local government area and part of the Greater Western Sydney region. According to reports, Toongabbie is derived from an Aboriginal term that means a location near water or a gathering near water. After asking the local Aboriginal people what they called the area, Governor Arthur Phillip gave its name in June 1792. Rose Hill was the original name of the area that would later become Parramatta, making Old Toongabbie the earliest recognized usage of an Aboriginal name for a place. The suburb was formed as the third colony in Australia following the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. To raise food for the colony, it was established as a government farm in April 1792. After eleven years, the government farm was shut down, and the land was distributed as grants to settlers and ex-convicts.
