A harborside suburb located in the eastern part of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Rose Bay is under the local government areas of the Waverley Council and Municipality of Woollahra. The Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge can both be seen from Rose Bay. Sydney Harbour borders Lyne Park on its western side. Just to the north of Rose Bay in Sydney Harbour lies Shark Island. The suburb was named after the Right Honorable George Rose, who served as Thomas Steele`s associate secretary to the British Treasury and whose name Steel(e) Point at Nielsen Park bears. Captain John Hunter first referred to Rose Bay in his journal entry from 1788. From 1912 to 1927, HMAS Tingira, named after an Aboriginal term for "open sea," was stationed near Rose Bay. In 1938, seaplane flights to and from London started and landed in Sydney Harbour on Rose Bay, establishing what is today Rose Bay Water Airport as Sydney`s first international airport.
