Watsons Bay, a picturesque harbourside suburb located 11 kilometers northeast of Sydney's central business district, is a part of the Municipality of Woollahra. Nestled at the end of the South Head peninsula, Watsons Bay derives its name from the sheltered bay on its western side in Port Jackson, offering breathtaking views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Historically, the area was home to the Cadigal people, with European settlement commencing in 1788. Named after Robert Watson, a former HMS Sirius crew member, Watsons Bay evolved from an isolated fishing village in the 1860s to a hub with hotels and ferry services in the 1870s. Noteworthy events include the tragic 1857 Dunbar shipwreck, leading to the construction of Hornby Lighthouse, and the existence of a tram line from the city to Watson's Bay, later closing in 1960. During World War II, Watsons Bay played a strategic role in Sydney Harbour defenses, and today, it stands as a residential area with landmarks like Camp Cove, Hornby Lighthouse, and heritage-listed sites. The suburb's population recorded 883 in the 2021 census, and its attractions include the annual "Every Man and His Dog" event on Australia Day, celebrating the bond between men and their dogs with stand-up paddleboard races.
