A small and densely populated suburb located in inner-city Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Potts Point is under the local government area of the City of Sydney. The suburb is situated north of Darlinghurst, west of Elizabeth Bay, and directly east of Woolloomooloo. The suburb is trapezoidal-shaped and is little more than 1 km long and 200 m broad at its largest point. In honor of Joseph Hyde Potts, a former employee of the Bank of New South Wales, Potts Point was given its name. He bought six and a half acres of waterfront property in Woolloomooloo Hill, which he dubbed Potts Point. A large portion of the property that now makes up Potts Point and the neighboring area of Elizabeth Bay was initially given to Alexander Macleay, who served as the New South Wales Colonial Secretary from 1826 to 1837 and is remembered by the naming of Macleay Street.
