A suburb in the Northern Sydney region, in New South Wales, Australia Melrose Park is split under the local government areas of the City of Parramatta and the City of Ryde. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Wallumedegal Aboriginal tribe inhabited the Walumetta region, which was between the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers. In the early European colonization, the Sydney Harbour Trust (Roads and Maritime Services) gave the name Melrose Park to the large housing development that was subdivided in 1928 with High Water Mark borders of riverside plots. Charles James Melrose (1913–1936), an aviator, is associated with the name Melrose Park. He was the only solo flyer to complete the Melbourne Centenary Air Race in 1934 and contributed to the futile search for Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. He also held several flying records. On a charter journey from Darwin to Melbourne, he perished when his plane crashed due to turbulence. Other aviators including Amy Johnson, Jean Batten, and Sir Alan Cobham are also honored on the suburb`s streets.
