A suburb located in Northern Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Putney is situated on the northern bank of the Parramatta River and under the local government area of the City of Ryde. The British colonists first called the region around Putney and Ryde as Eastern Farms and later on as Kissing Point. It was one of the first places in the colony where the British had settled. Brewer James Squire, who made his home here in 1792, was one of the area`s first residents. He built his brewery, the Malt Shovel, not far from where Kissing Point is today. Nicholas Bayley received a land grant that included the eastern portion of Putney. Later, the land was sold to Eugene Delange, who divided it up and named the new neighborhood. Later, the name was changed to Putney, which was inspired by the London neighborhood of Putney on the River Thames.
