About Marrickville

A suburb located in the Inner West part of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Marrickville is the largest suburb under the local government area of the Inner West Council. The suburb is situated on Cooks River’s northern bank, on the opposite side of Earlwood, and is bordered by Stanmore, Newton, St Peters, Tempe, Enmore, Dulwich Hill, Sydenham, Petersham, and Hurlstone Park. The suburb possesses a culturally diverse population in low to high-density residential, commercial, and light-industrial areas. The name of the suburb originated from the Marrick estate which belongs to Thomas Chalder, who named his property after his birthplace in Marrick, North Yorkshire, England. The property lies on the crossing of Chapel Street and Victoria Road. The publican of the Marrick Hotel, William Dean, is the one responsible for adding the word “ville” to the suburb name when it was officially declared as a suburb in the year 1861.
