About Stanmore
Stanmore, a suburb in Sydney`s Inner West, lies 6 kilometers southwest of the central business district. It`s part of the Inner West Council, known for its extensive row of shops along Parramatta Road. Originally inhabited by the Gadigal clan of the Eora people, Stanmore`s land was allocated to colonial officers in the late 18th century. Named by settler John Jones in 1835 after his birthplace in London, Stanmore evolved from subdivisions like North and South Kingston. In the late 19th century, it transformed into a desirable location, marked by the establishment of Newington College and the Percival Road shopping area. Stanmore experienced further development in the 20th century, incorporating light industry in the 1920s. The suburb is rich in heritage, with sites like Stanmore railway station and New South Wales Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Office. In the 2021 census, Stanmore had a population of 7,619, reflecting its multicultural composition. The suburb is served by Stanmore railway station and features a small shopping center and commercial developments along Parramatta Road.
