About Leonay

A suburb of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Leonay is under the local government area of the City of Penrith and part of the Greater Western Sydney region. The suburb was a former vineyard owned by Leo Buring; while the suburb was named after Leo combined with his wife’s name, Nay. However, in present times, the former vineyard has been replaced with designer houses that run up the hill at the bottom of the Blue Mountains Escarpment. Before the arrival of the Europeans, Leonay was originally the home of the Mulgoa people who spoke the Darug language. The natives lived as both hunter-gatherers and in a land management system where traditional laws are established such as when certain foods would be left alone or cultivated. Their houses are made out of bark and called “gunyahs”. They often hunted emus and kangaroos for meat, and forage berries, berries, and other native plants.
