Kirrawee is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. The suburb can be found in the local government area of Sutherland Shire, approximately 25 kilometres south of the Sydney Central Business District. Its name was believed to have been derived from two possible facts which are one is that it came from an Aboriginal word that is translated to ‘lengthy’, and another is that it is from a Dharawal word “gi(a)rrawee(i)” meaning ‘place of white cockatoos’ or ‘sulphur-crested cockatoos’. There are commercial and residential developments which can be seen within the area. Historically, the place where Kirrawee lies today is said to have been home to the Dharawal people prior to European settlement. Kirrawee features a small shopping village located on Oak Road which consists of food outlets, law firm, dentist, real estate agents, and other shops. There are also schools, churches and parks that can be found in Kirrawee such as the Kirrawee High School, St Mary, St Bakhomious, and St Shenouda Coptic Orthodox Church, and others. According to the 2016 Australian census, the population of the suburb includes 9,278 residents.
