About Cheltenham

A suburb under the jurisdiction of the local government area of Hornsby Shire, Cheltenham is located in the Northern Sydney region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Since its establishment, the suburb has only been composed of residential areas with no commercial or shopping district. Residents of Cheltenham often shop in the nearby Beecroft, Pennant Hills, or Epping. Cheltenham possesses a distinct English atmosphere, distinguished by the 19th-century mansions along tree-lined streets. The name of the suburb came from the house built by a Sydney sailor and men’s outfitter, William Chorley. He named the house after his birthplace in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, on the land he acquired when it was released from Field of Mars Reserve. Subsequently, Chorley asked the government to build a train station in the area and to also name it after his property, which is the Cheltenham station that opened in 1898.
