About Gordon

A suburb located on the Upper North Shore of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Gordon is the administrative center for the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council. The name of the suburb first appears as the name of the survey parish that covers almost the entirety of the upper north shore which was assigned by the NSW Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell. Many believed that it was to honor Sir Willoughby Gordon, who served in the Peninsular War and was the quartermaster-general of the regiment that Mitchell belongs to. Along with the survey parish, the suburb and municipality of Willoughby also honor his name. The settlement at present-day Gordon was originally called Lane Cove, with a school that was established under the order of Governor Macquarie in 1816 while the Lane Cove Post Office was opened February 1, 1860. The name of both the village and Post Office was later changed after the Gordondale estate that belonged to Robert McIntosh.
