Bankstown is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. It is named in honour of the botanist Joseph Banks. The suburb, located 20 kilometres southwest of the capital, is considered a major commercial and administrative centre in south-western Sydney. Bankstown is also recognised as the most multicultural area in the country because of its ethnically diverse communities. The suburb features 60 different languages spoken by its people. The suburb`s central business district can be found around the Bankstown Railway Station, and next to it is its commercial area called the Bankstown Plaza. During World War II, the suburb became known as the “Yankstown” due to the presence of the US Army Air Force in Bankstown.
