A coastal suburb located in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, South Coogee is part of the local government area of the City of Randwick. To the north lies an independent suburb called Coogee. While the suburbs of Kingsford, Maroubra, and Coogee encircle South Coogee. The name “Coogee” is believed to come from an Aboriginal term called konjac, which translates to "smelly place" or "stinking seaweed" and refers to the odor of decomposing kelp that has washed up on the shore. Large amounts of seaweed are occasionally still washed ashore, although they are typically removed before they have a chance to stink. From the 1820s onward, early visitors to the region were never able to determine the exact meaning of "Coogee" or whether it was associated with Coogee Beach. After being gazetted as a village in 1838, Coogee grew slowly until an electric tram connected it to the city in 1902.
