A small suburb located on the western side of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Minchinbury is under the local government area of the City of Blacktown and part of the Greater Western Sydney region. The suburb is mainly composed of residential areas with a small retail/commercial area in its center and westernmost part. The name of the suburb came from the property owned by Captain William Minchin, this 1,000-acre land was awarded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie when William retired in 1819. William Minchin served as the colony`s Principal Superintendent of Police and Police Fund Treasurer. The Minchin family and other lessees mostly grazed cattle on the Minchinbury land, which was completely undeveloped. Maria Matilda received ownership of the land upon William`s passing in 1821. Maria Matilda and her family perished at sea in 1838, and William Minchin has no living descendants to this day. Which resulted in the land being given to Minchin`s brother who resides in Canada.
