A suburb located in the eastern part of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, La Perouse is in the City of Randwick’s local government area. The La Perouse peninsula marks the northern part of Botany Bay and is known for its historic military fortification on Bare Island and the Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Within Botany Bay, there are sheltered swimming spots at Congwong Bay Beach, Little Congwong Beach, and the beach at Frenchmans Bay. Among Sydney`s suburbs, La Perouse stands out for its French name, along with Sans Souci and Vaucluse. Situated across the bay on its southern headland is Kurnell. For the Muruora-dial people in this area, La Perouse was called the "Gooriwal." It is believed that the Gameygal or Kameygal clan, of the Dharawal people, lived in this area spanning from the Cooks River mouth to what is now La Perouse.
