Kurraba Point is a suburb located on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is a harbourside suburb in the local government area of North Sydney Council. Before the arrival of the First Fleet, the present-day Kurraba Point is occupied by the Cam-mer-ray-gal Group of the Ku-ring-gai Aboriginal Tribe. The name “Karraba” or Kurraba” came from aboriginal origin which means Hungry Bay or Shell Cove. Kurraba Point was once part of the 700-acre land grant given to Lieutenant Alfred Thrupp, it was previously called “Alfred Point Reserve” or “Thrupp’s Acres”. This grant is now the present-day Neutral Bay and Kurraba Point. The Kurraba Point Reserve was quarried in the 1850s for sandstone to be used for the construction of Fort Denison, and ballasts for ships returning from England, as well as for local building. During these times the area was known as “Thrupp’s Point” and “Ballast Point”.
