A small suburb located in the western part of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Holroyd is part of the local government area of the Cumberland Council. The former local government of Holroyd City took its name from the first Mayor of the area, Arthur Holroyd, a local landowner, and businessman. Arthur acquired Sherwood Scrubs in 1855, which he named after his former home in England. Arthur became a Member of Parliament first for Bathurst Plains before Parramatta; he was also one of NSW Supreme Court’s judges and had finished his one-year medical residency in London on top of being a keen businessman. Arthur is powerful and well-respected and has positions on various boards and committees. He also became the mayor of the Municipality of Prospect and Sherwood after his service in the Holroyd Council. Arthur was also the one responsible for the clay pipes for the Sherwood Scrubs’ drainage and the one to introduce drainage to the local area.
