A suburb in the northern part of Sydney, Freshwater is under the local government area of Northern Beaches Council and part of the Northern Beaches region. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the area known today as Freshwater was once fished and used by the clans of the Gayamaygal of the south and the Garigal people of the north. Traces of their habitation remain up to the present in the form of native art like open campsites, rock engravings, and rock shelters. When the Europeans arrived, Thomas Bruin received a land grant in the area from the Crown. The suburb also possesses famous landmarks such as Freshwater Beach which can be found between Curl Curl and Queenscliff and lies on the Manly to Curl Curl Beach walk.
