Phalaenopsis Orchid (Phalaenopsis spp.):
Description:
Phalaenopsis orchids, also known as moth orchids, are popular indoor orchids with large, showy flowers. They come in a variety of colours, including white, pink, purple, and yellow. The flowers have a characteristic butterfly or moth-like shape.
Care instructions:
Phalaenopsis orchids prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves. They can thrive in average room temperatures between 18°C and 24°C, with slightly cooler temperatures at night. Provide good air circulation around the plant but avoid placing them in drafty areas.
Watering: Water your Phalaenopsis orchid thoroughly when the potting medium feels dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering or letting the plant sit in standing water, as it can lead to root rot. It's best to water the orchid in the morning, allowing any excess water to drain away.
Humidity: Phalaenopsis orchids appreciate high humidity levels. You can increase humidity by placing the orchid pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles, ensuring that the bottom of the pot does not touch the water. Misting the leaves occasionally can also help maintain humidity.
Potting: Use a well-draining orchid potting mix, typically composed of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Repot your Phalaenopsis orchid every one to two years or when the potting medium starts to break down.
Fertilising: Feed your orchid with a balanced orchid fertiliser diluted according to the package instructions. Apply the fertiliser every two to four weeks during the growing season and reduce or stop fertilising during the dormant period.
Phalaenopsis orchids are stunning houseplants and with proper care, they can bloom for several months at a time. Enjoy their graceful flowers and elegant presence in your home!
