Firesticks (Euphorbia tirucalli):

These are a unique and visually striking succulent plant native to Africa and India. It's also known by other names such as "pencil cactus," "sticks on fire," or "African milk bush." This plant is valued for its distinctive appearance and vibrant colouration. Firesticks have pencil-thin, cylindrical stems that range in colour from green to bright red or orange, especially when exposed to bright sunlight. The plant's appearance can resemble a cluster of thin sticks, which is how it got its common names.

Care instructions:

  • Lighting: Firesticks thrive in bright, direct sunlight. To maintain its vibrant colouration, it's essential to provide it with plenty of light. However, be cautious of scorching the plant in extremely hot climates.

  • Temperature: Firesticks prefer warm temperatures and are not cold-tolerant. They should be protected from frost and extreme cold conditions.

  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently and reduce watering in the dormant season (fall and winter).

  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A mix containing sand, perlite, and potting soil works well.

  • Fertilization: Feed firesticks with a balanced, diluted liquid succulent fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) about once a month. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant season.

  • Propagation: Firesticks can be propagated through stem cuttings. Allow the cuttings to dry and callous for a few days before planting them in a well-draining soil mix. The cuttings will root and develop into new plants.

  • Pruning: Prune firesticks as needed to maintain its desired shape and size. The plant can become quite tall if not pruned occasionally.

  • Toxicity: Keep in mind that firesticks, like many euphorbias, contain a white latex sap that can be irritating to the skin and harmful if ingested. Wear gloves and be cautious when handling the plant.

  • Indoor vs. Outdoor: Firesticks can be grown both indoors and outdoors, depending on your climate. They are often used as outdoor ornamental plants in warmer regions.

Firesticks are prized for their stunning appearance and can add a bold splash of colour to your succulent collection or garden. Just be sure to provide them with the right care, especially in terms of light and water, to keep their vibrant coloration and healthy growth.
