Ficus (Ficus retusa)

Also known as the Chinese Banyan, is a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts due to its adaptability, attractive aerial roots, and small leaves.

Care Instructions:

  • Species Selection: Ficus retusa is a favored choice for bonsai. It's known for its aerial roots and tolerance to bonsai training techniques.

  • Bonsai Training:

    • Pruning: Regular pruning is important to maintain the shape and size of the bonsai. Trim new growth to encourage ramification (branching).
    • Wiring: Ficus bonsai can be wired to shape the branches, but be cautious as their branches are somewhat brittle. Check and adjust the wires regularly to prevent them from cutting into the bark.
  • Repotting: Repot your ficus bonsai every 2 to 3 years, ideally in early spring. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix, and consider root pruning to maintain a healthy root system.

  • Watering: Ficus bonsai prefer to be kept evenly moist. Water thoroughly when the top inch of the soil feels slightly dry. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

  • Lighting: Ficus bonsai need bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch their leaves. Place them near a window with filtered sunlight.

  • Temperature: Ficus bonsai are adaptable to a range of temperatures. They prefer warm conditions, but they can tolerate cooler temperatures as long as they are not exposed to frost.

  • Humidity: Ficus bonsai enjoy higher humidity levels. You can increase humidity by misting the foliage regularly or placing the bonsai on a humidity tray filled with water and pebbles.

  • Fertilization: Feed your ficus bonsai with a balanced, water-soluble bonsai fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or stop fertilization during the winter months.

  • Pest and Disease Control: Watch for pests like spider mites and aphids. Regularly inspect your bonsai and take appropriate measures if you notice any signs of pests or diseases.

  • Styling: Ficus bonsai can be styled in various bonsai forms, including formal upright, informal upright, and cascade. Choose a style that complements the natural growth pattern of the tree.

  • Indoor vs. Outdoor: Ficus bonsai can be grown both indoors and outdoors, but they will require slightly different care. Indoor ficus bonsai will need bright light and might benefit from being moved outdoors during warmer months.

  • Winter Care: In colder climates, protect your ficus bonsai from frost by moving it indoors or providing winter protection.
