Cymbidium Orchid:

These are a popular and beautiful group of orchids that are well-loved for their stunning flowers and long-lasting blooms.Cymbidium orchids are epiphytic or lithophytic orchids, meaning they can grow on trees or rocks in their natural habitat. They have long, slender, and leathery leaves that emerge from pseudobulbs. The flowers are large and come in various colours, including shades of white, yellow, green, pink, and burgundy. Each flower spike can produce multiple flowers that can last for several weeks.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Cymbidium orchids prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sunlight, but intense afternoon sun can be harmful. Ideally, place them near an east or west-facing window, or provide filtered light with a sheer curtain.
  • Temperature: Cymbidium orchids thrive in moderate temperatures, between 18C to 24C during the day and slightly cooler at night. They can tolerate occasional temperature fluctuations, but avoid exposing them to extremes.
  • Watering: Water Cymbidium orchids thoroughly when the potting mix feels dry to the touch. It's essential to avoid overwatering, as their roots can rot. Let excess water drain out of the pot and avoid letting them sit in standing water.
  • Humidity: These orchids prefer moderate to high humidity levels. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing a tray with water and pebbles near the plants, or misting them regularly.
  • Potting Mix: Cymbidium orchids grow well in a well-draining orchid mix. A typical mix consists of a combination of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Repotting should be done every couple of years or when the potting mix starts to break down.
  • Fertiliser: Feed Cymbidium orchids with a balanced orchid fertiliser, following the manufacturer's instructions. During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilise every two weeks, and reduce or stop fertilization during the fall and winter.
  • Flowering: Cymbidium orchids typically bloom once a year during the winter or early spring. The flower spikes emerge from the base of the pseudobulbs and can last for several weeks.
  • Pruning: After the flowering period, you can cut the flower spike near the base to encourage the plant to put its energy into new growth.

Cymbidium orchids are popular as both indoor and outdoor plants, depending on the climate. In colder regions, they are often grown indoors, while in milder climates, they can thrive outdoors in partial shade. With proper care and attention to their light, temperature, watering, and humidity needs, Cymbidium orchids can reward you with beautiful and long-lasting blooms for many years.

Remember, these care instructions are general guidelines, and it's always good to observe your plant and adjust the care routine accordingly.
