About Richmond

A town in the Greater Western Sydney region, in New South Wales, Australia, Richmond is part of the local government area of the City of Hawkesbury. When British settlers first arrived in the region in 1789, they called the neighboring prominence to the west of the Hawkesbury River "Richmond Hill." In honor of Charles Lennox, the third Duke of Richmond, who served as Master General of Ordnance under the Pitt government, Governor Arthur Phillip gave the place its name. After Sydney and Parramatta, this area was the third to see European settlement in Australia. In 1794, 22 European settlers made their way to the region. They came to cultivate a total of 12 hectares in what is now Pitt Town Bottoms. To support the fledgling colony`s dire need for food, they required suitable farming land. About half of the colony`s grain production was generated in this area by 1799.
