About Monterey

A suburb in the southern part of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia, Monterey is under the local government area of the Bayside Council and part of the St George area. The suburb is located on the western shores of Botany Bay. Along the eastern boundary are Cook Park and Lady Robinsons Beach. There is a pond in Scarborough Park, which stretches along the western border of the suburb. The suburb was originally part of Brighton-Le-Sands and Ramsgate. As the region grew, street names with a Californian influence, such as Hollywood, Monterey, Pasadena, and Culver, were chosen. The Monterey post office was the name of the local post office when it first opened. The Rockdale Council intended to build a new suburb. Still, not everyone liked the name since they believed it was too American, especially considering several local streets already had American names. Since the majority of people agreed, Monterey was classified as a suburb in 1972.
