A suburb in Northern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Forestville is under the local government area of Northern Beaches Council and part of the Forest District. The name Forestville means ‘town in the forest’; the suburb was originally a densely wooded forest until James French settled around the area and started cutting timbers in 1856. He built a small wharf on Bantry Bay to ship his timber to Sydney. French then later acquired more land in the neighboring suburb which has taken his name, Frenchs Forest. The suburb is located at the crossing between Northern Beaches and North Shore. The suburb is bordered to the west and east by Garigal National Park’s bushland and by Middle Harbour to the south.
